Circassia is a region in the Caucasus that was independent before the Russian invasion of the Caucasus between 1763-1864. Historically it comprised the southern half of the current Krasnodar Territory most of the interior of the current Stavropol Territory Karachay-Cherkessia Adygea and Kabardino-Balkaria Republics of the Russian Federation. However the region now only refers to a portion of the Karachay-Cherkessia Adygea Kabardino-Balkaria and Shapsugia.
